Common Questions
Is there Universal Binary? As of version 1.2, SurfRabbit is released as a Universal Binary.
Common Questions
What applications does SurfRabbit support?
SurfRabbit supports the following applications and capabilities:
- Safari - full support
- Shiira - full support
- OmniWeb 5.5 - viewing only (beta support - see ReadMe file)
- DeskBrowse - viewing only
- WebDesktop - viewing only
- NetNewsWire (not Lite) - viewing only
While not all applications can be used to create customizations, all applications will allow you to view the current list of customizations installed, and to browse Rabbits and install new customizations.
Does SurfRabbit filter advertisements? No. SurfRabbit is not a content filter - it is a web page customizer. It will not actively try to filter out any advertisements.
Will SurfRabbit change content on customized pages?SurfRabbit does not change or modify any of the content of a customized page (such as modifying the text or graphics of a page).
Does SurfRabbit track how I use web sites, or which ones I visit? No. SurfRabbit does not contain any spyware, malware or other malicious code. If you are concerned about security, we suggest you always download your official copy of SurfRabbit from the official site or from any of its official download mirrors.
Will SurfRabbit work with other browser add-ons?SurfRabbit should coexist with other add-ons without problems. If another add-on also provides the ability to add your own style declarations to specific pages, you should make sure this feature is enabled only in SurfRabbit or the other add-on, but not both at the same time.
How do I know which version of SurfRabbit I'm running? The version information will appear in the menu item, as well as in the introduction page of the Help Guide.
How do I disable SurfRabbit for my browser? To disable SurfRabbit for a particular browser, run its installer again, make sure the support option for your chosen browser is unchecked, then click Install. After the installation, SurfRabbit will only be enabled for the browsers that were selected.
How do I remove SurfRabbit? To remove SurfRabbit, follow these steps:
- Quit the web browser.
- Open a Finder window, and navigate to your Library folder, then select the InputManagers folder (ie. your user name -> Library -> InputManagers).
- Drag the SurfRabbit folder to the Trash (you will not be able to empty the Trash completely until you log out or restart). SurfRabbit will now be disabled on your computer account.
- You can also optionally remove your SurfRabbit preferences by navigating to your Library folder, then selecting the Preferences folder (ie. your user name -> Library -> Preferences), and dragging the file named com.SurfRabbit.plist to the Trash.
Common Problems
When customizing, I get giberish on the screen. This can happen if there are many dynamically generated elements in the page. In this case, it may not be possible to customize the page.
Another cause is that the page's code is not valid; you can test the validity of a page by using W3C's Validator and giving it the URL of the page to test. The more errors the page has, the less likely it will be customizable.
The selection tools/button don't work. Some pages may not be customizable, usually because they have too much dynamic content, but you should still be able to specify custom style settings for the page by reloading the page and selecting from the SurfRabbit menu.
I can't select a desired section when customizing.Try increasing the spacing of the elements and using the tips described in Tips for selecting sections to customize. If the section still cannot be selected, it may be dynamically generated, and hence not customizable.
Some page sections (such as flash based objects) still appear after being customized.Due to a bug in the current implementation of Webkit, flash objects will still appear despite being customized. When an updated Webkit appears that fixes this bug, the customizations will work correctly automatically (no updates to SurfRabbit will be necessary).
When I click to customize some sections, another section of the page is highlighted. This is most likely due to having clicked some dynamically generated portion of the page. SurfRabbit cannot customize these portions, and will automatically select the outter section that contains the selected portion, which may not appear at the same position on the page. Previewing the page will allow you to determine if the section you selected was customized as desired.
Some or all menu items in the SurfRabbit menu are disabled. Some menu items will be disabled while a customization is in progress. If your browser allows you to visit multiple pages at once by using windows or tabs, the page being customized might be obscured by these windows; go through each window/tab to find the customization in progress and save or discard it.
If the entire SurfRabbit menu is disabled, then your SurfRabbit configuration was saved by a more recent version of SurfRabbit and cannot be used on your current installation of SurfRabbit. Please visit the download an updated version.
The wrong sections are customized, or the customization is inconsistent when viewing a customized page.If the page isn't always customized as you had intended, it may be that the page is dynamic (ie. changes often). Try reloading the page in its uncustomized form several times, taking note if there are sections that appear/disappear or move on the page after each reload. If this is the case, you should avoid customizing these dynamic sections, and instead try to specify style settings (as described in Editing style settings for a page) to customize these sections.
Another cause can be that you have a user style sheet specified which will normally get applied to all pages you view; try disabling the user style sheet while creating a customization (please refer to the browser's documentation for instructions on specifying a user style sheet).
I can customize a page, but can't save or preview it.There can be some problems with certain pages where the customization process can be started, but saving or previewing won't work. This mostly occurs on pages with dynamic content, and may also be caused by a possible bug in the Operating System's WebKit framework.
We're looking into the problem and hope there will be a fix in the future, but for now such pages can't be customized; you should however still be able to specify custom style settings for the page by reloading the page and selecting from the SurfRabbit menu.
I'd like to set my own keyboard shortcut for the SurfRabbit menu.If your current verion of OS X has this functionality, you can set your own shortcuts in the Keyboard & Mouse Preference Pane.
